Part IV My Views
Stem cell research could hold the key to curing diseases, helping people walk, or talk, or even see again, there are so many plus sides to using stem cells. If medical researchers could research stem cells, they would be using aborted fetuses, that means they are already dead and cannot grow into an adult. By the world not using them it’s more of a waste to their lives because otherwise, they would just be thrown away.
In the words of Dr. Jeremy Sugarman “stem cell research can potentially help treat a range of medical problems, it could lead humanity closer to better treatment and possibly cure a number of diseases”, this means that diseases like Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, or even cancer could be cured. Parkinson’s disease affects 60,000 new people every year, and 7.8 million people die every year from cancer. Imagine if doctors could cure these diseases instead of just treating them and hoping for the best.
Spinal cord injuries affect around 4-5 million people every year in the U.S. and 42% of those people paralyzed from car accidents. “Spinal cord injuries will be able to be treated as a result of using stem cells which can be used to regrow the spinal cord” (Sugarman). With all of the athletes worldwide, or people in car accidents, or our military that has had a back injury that has left them paralyzed could be cured and they could walk or play the sport they love again.
Another thing we could do is get rid of the need for an organ transplant. We could do this by using the recipient's own cells to grow the organ which makes the risk of rejection 0%. This means that little kids who are in need of a heart, or a kidney don’t need to search the whole U.S. for an organ they may never find. One could be made for them and their chances of living would go way up. Also it would be way cheaper so they family won’t be in debt the rest of their lives.
In conclusion, stem cells could be they key that unlocks the door to cures we thought we would never get. It could also help with injuries that would otherwise leave someone paralyzed or even dead. Finally, it would help people in need of a transplant in multiple ways. The cost would go down, the risk, and the waiting time while searching for an organ, that may or may not work.
